As Karuana
Bühne

Rhythmen des Amazonas treffen politische Botschaften. Tanzt mit den Beats des indigenen Frauenkollektivs.
The Karuana performance is a musical and performative experience that integrates ancestral chants, Amazonian rhythms, and contemporary narratives about territory, spirituality, and Indigenous resistance. The presentation combines live music, stage presence, and audience interaction, creating an immersive atmosphere that connects art, environmental awareness, and collective feminine strength.
More about the collective:
Karuana is an Indigenous female music collective formed in 2018 by women from different ethnic groups of the Lower Tapajós region, in the Brazilian Amazon. In Nheengatu, “Karuana” refers to spiritual beings who protect the sacred rivers and forests — a name that reflects the group’s connection to ancestry, territory, and resistance.
Blending Amazonian rhythms with Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian musical traditions such as carimbó, the group creates a vibrant and powerful sound rooted in drums, maracas, and collective voices.
For Karuana, music is more than performance — it is a tool for environmental awareness, cultural preservation, and spiritual strength. Their work addresses themes such as climate justice, Indigenous rights, and the leadership of Indigenous women. Since 2019, the group has performed at festivals, schools, and cultural institutions in Brazil and internationally, releasing an album, an EP, music videos, and a documentary, as well as collaborating with international artists.
